Diet Myths Part Two: True or False?
Unsurprisingly most myths are about food and sex, the things we have and do most in life. In order to live we have to eat and if we didn’t have sex then human life would come to an end. Today we have a massive amount of choice in what we eat. Quite a lot of food is not all that great health wise to eat, although mighty tasty. Is our food supply a safe as it was? In this day and age you would think so. So why is there so many articles, newspaper reports about people becoming ill after eating one thing or another?
Here you go a few myths and whether they are true or false.
Preservatives: Good or Bad? Preservatives are good for you as they are infact what stops you from getting sick. If we didn’t have them then far more people would be getting illnesses from food.
Hangover cure - Coffee: Don’t be silly coffee or caffeine won’t cure your hangover. What you need to feel better the morning after is to drink water as that is what your system is lacking. Caffeine will make you want to go to the toilet more so it will have the opposite effect making you even more dehydrated.
Is it better to eat slowly or fast? The more you chew the more your food is broken down when it goes into your stomach. So eating slower is the better option. That is what your teeth are for, they have many uses when eating. So make sure you look after them.
Beans, beans are good for your heart the more you eat the more you ……….. Is this true well it’s sure is. Eating beans will cause gas, why because they are high in fibre. Also corn and peppers which are high in fibre will have this effect. You could soak your beans before you cook them, it will take some of the gas away but not all of it.
Carrots: Do they improve your eyesight? A tricky one to answer as no carrots do not help improve your eyesight, but they do make your eyes healthy. Which may sound like a contradiction. Carrots just help maintain your current ability to see.
What if I swallow gum? A little bit here and there isn’t going to do much. However, some side effects of swallowing gum can be diarrhoea, stomach pain and gas. So probably best to avoid swallowing gum if you can.
Can cherries help if you have arthritis? They can, people who eat 20 cherries a day can have a reduction in the pain they are suffering from with arthritis.
Parsley equals fresh breathe? As parsley contains chlorophyll as do other green leafy veggies, then yes if you eat it your breath will become fresher.
And finally a classic myth for you. An apple a day. Well it is true eating an apple a day can keep the doctor away. It may also reduce the risk of cancer and also lower your cholesterol. As with most things some myths are true and some are not. If you are not sure then have a look into the myth before you try it.
